Social Media in your Marketing Plan

In our social media campaigns class, we had a great speaker come and talk about how the Columbus Metropolitan Library uses social media. Julie Theado is the social media manager for the library and had some great advice to share with our class.

She first talked about why the library used social media to build their brand.

  1. To build a relationship with customers and media
  2. To manage the reputation and brand management
  3. To create consistent message
  4. To find immediate results
  5. To find what interest your customers through measurement
One of the best pieces of advice she gave was making sure social media was just a portion of your overall marketing and public relations plan. Social media should be used as a tool and vehicle to get people back to your main message. Social media shouldn't stand alone but work as part of the big picture.

Julie gave us some action steps to help create an online personality:
  • Don't differ from your brand - tie back to strategy plan
  • Share information that is interesting to customers - don't always be self-serving
  • Friendly, human interactions - yet be professional
  • Like other community page or businesses respond on their pages.
Thank you Julie for coming and speaking to our class! We really appreciate all the wonderful advice.
